Un pas a dos. Pensar des de

Step two. Thinking from the perspective of ...

Lectures season. January – March 2013

Sessions at 8.15 pm
at bar El Gravat (Sant Miquel, 19 Vic. Tel. 938860276)

Organised by Cafè Central and El Gravat

With collaboration of H. Associació per a les Arts Contemporànies and ACVic Centre d'Arts Contemporànies

How do we think about the world? Each discipline establishes strategies for understanding it, interpreting it, and sometimes also intervening in it, one way or another. The specialisation and compartmentalisation of knowledge and practice mean that, increasingly, this knowledge ends up isolated, often losing distribution, and limiting the possibilities of reciprocal influences.

In these dialogues, loose and accessible, between specialists in the same discipline, an attempt will be made to deal with each discipline in itself, as well as how this knowledge can help us to interpret and learn about the world.

- Thursday, 10th of January
Thinking from the perspective of the classics. Joan Ferrer and Oriol Ponsatí-Murlà

- Thursday, 24th of January
Thinking from the perspective of biomedicine. Cristina Pujades and Amadeu Godayol

- Thursday, 7th of February
Thinking from the perspective of literature. Sònia Moll and Víctor Sunyol

- Thursday, 21st of February

Thinking from the perspective of a certain mysticism. Ramon Andrés and Antoni Clapés

- Thursday, 7th of March

Thinking from the perspective of music. Jaume Ayats and Joaquim Rabaseda

In this course we will teach you the concepts and notions of the web as an interactive space for content and dissemination. To understand code and how it works, to structure content, to organise content graphically, to learn the programmes and to learn how to use a number of software tools, are key elements in acquiring autonomy and action in the digital world. We will focus specifically on open source software tools, as they become practical analogies of the cooperative model driven by digital culture. Art therapy is concerned with the person, and has a wide field of applications, in areas such as rehabilitation, education or mental health.

Presentation of the project Morir de frío

Morir de Frío. Presentation of a project in the blog format. www.morirdefrio.com

Morir de frío represents the authors' wish to promote reflection upon art, in all its contexts, by means of a blog. The blog, through a series
of essays, discusses various aspects of art,  philosophy and films; making comments on exhibitions, chronicling various events, analysing
films, making interviews and discovering emerging artists.

The project was publicly presented in May at the COSMO gallery in Barcelona, accompanied by Lluís Nacenta.  Now the artists come to Vic to
explain their motivation in writing this blog, and to invite us to rethink art criticism together, or at least, to rethink the act of writing about art today.

Morir de frío a project by Edgar Díaz (Barcelona 1991), Anna Dot (Vic 1991), Palma Lombardo (Osca 1991), Blai Marginedas (Vic 1990), Raquel Vila (Vic 1990) and Alba Vilamala (Vic 1991).

#4. THE FUNCTION OF IMAGES +INFO
Course by Jorge Luís Marzo

DATES
4 sessions of 3 hours.
11th, 18th, 25th April and 2nd May 2012
from 6 to 9pm

INTRODUCTION
Depending upon the surroundings and contexts of, and the responses to, their distribution, images may take on another meaning, transforming the communications strategies attributed to them by their producers. When we situate a work of art in an artistically decoded context, a completely different response to the picture may develop to that which we would usually expect. This also happens when we talk about other fields such as advertising, socio-political or religious information. This course aims to give tools to "professionals" and teachers to make them aware of the enormous complexity involved in understanding the image in a way that will also make it easier to understand the context in which their work will be presented. The course will be taught in plain language without losing sight of the complexity of some of the topics covered, providing a wide range of audiovisual resources to give users interpretative tools. This course has the objective of being a meeting point between different sensibilities, both professional and social.

XARXAPROD CONFERENCE. CULTURAL POLICIES, MODELS OF FINANCE AND ARTISTIC PRACTICES

CULTURAL POLICIES, MODELS OF FINANCE AND ARTISTIC PRACTICES
XARXAPROD CONFERENCE

Venue: ACVic Centre d'Arts Contemporànies
C. Sant Francesc, 1 08500 Vic

14.12.2011
4.30 pm to 8.00 pm
Debate open to the public

Cultural Policies and models of finance in relation to artistic practices.

Session organised by Xarxaprod in association with ACVic in order to discuss the new scenario which, due to global economic changes, affects more localised cultural policies and funding mechanisms to carry out specific projects in the field of artistic practices within the Catalan context. Within the framework of this conference, a debate has been organised with politically responsible parties  related to various territorial authorities, who, in discussion with experts involved in the fields of cultural economy, project management and analysis of cultural context, will address issues of specific interest to members of Xarxaprod.

Xarxaprod is a non-profit organisation that brings together 25 members from organisations, institutions and projects  providing resources, means and support to production processes in the field of contemporary artistic creation. Its function is to promote initiatives and stimulate creative projects, aiming to provide a public service.

Overall Xarxaprod offers services such as space, technical and / or management resources, training, financial aid and workshops or residencies. Since 2006 Xarxaprod has opted to combine strategies for the promotion of research, production,  audience outreach and dissemination of artistic practices. Management is carried out by teams from many different artistic disciplines who, in many cases, perform several functions  simultaneously, such as artistic practice, teaching, curating and project management. Overall there is a clear interest in promoting research as an artistic paradigm,  self-managed projects, and the opening up of  new locations to set the stage for cultural development, social interaction and proximity to potential users. Xarxaprod covers the whole of Catalonia, settling in a variety of locations among the capital and large cities, medium cities and small towns. The framework of relationships among members is held under the principles of the ethos of sustainability and reciprocity.

The aims of this conference are to analyse and discuss the present situation and the future of CULTURAL POLICIES AND  MODELS OF FINANCE IN
RELATION TO ARTISTIC PRACTICES which until now have  been characterised by an articulation and expansion of artistic projects throughout Catalonia. But, under current circumstances it is expected that in the near future,  these policies and models must be rethought in order to survive, and redefined as a public service, in order to justify themselves before a society  which traditionally demands basic infrastructures, but which is much more passive and disconnected to cultural activities. Most members of  Xarxaprod are attempting to ameliorate this situation , but it will be a task requiring long term commitment and the involvement of many agents. Faced with this challenge Xarxaprod's aim is to understand and analyse possible future scenarios.

Presentation of the project, Ceci n'est pas une voiture.

Thursday 1st December 2011, 7.30pm
Presentation of the result of the working-group debates by contributors.

Artifacts of direct action is a conference designed to discuss processes by which tools for renovating the habitual rôles of contemporary art might be assembled. We, in recent years, faced with the insistence of the institutional museum on managing contemporary cultural production as an object for passive recognition, have witnessed a proliferation of self-managed initiatives which broaden the vast range of possibilities appearing through the implementation of artistic practices in public space. These initiatives have allowed new formats of exhibition devices to be created, which have become tools of direct participation, at the service of social research.

Sessions are framed within the project Ceci n'est pas une voiture. A project based on mobile artifacts created in different cities around the world as tools for generating new institutional practices, and for rethinking educational experiences in social space.
This project is conceived as a process combining research, production, training and broadcasting, in distinct phases which started in July 2010 and which was scheduled to finish January 2012, also part of the line of investigation opened by the Museo Reina Sofia and its networked programme
in recent years regarding new practices and new institutional policies.

Courses offered:

EL D_EFECTE BARROC (The Baroque [D]effect) +info
A course by Jorge Luis Marzo

The seminar will take as its starting point the exhibition commissioned from Jorge Luís Marzo and Teresa Badia, "El D_Efecte Barroc, politics of the Hispanic image", produced by and exhibited at the CCCB, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, from November 2010 through to February 2011. Using the documentary archive prepared for the exhibition, the seminar will attempt an analysis of Hispanicity as a common and homogeneous frame between Spain and Latin America. The "baroque" narrative will be proposed as a sample of the politico-cultural strategies which have helped to bring about over the course of time an official homogenising narrative, the Hispanic myth, and of artists' responsibility in the myth's durability. The seminar will offer investigative tools to allow for the enhancement of discursive lines by means of constant contribution of points of view and parallel experiences.

POST-OIL CITIES: FUTUR SCENARIOS

Presentation
Almost all activities in our society are, directly or indirectly, oil dependent. OIL is not only used to generate energy - we use it mainly in transport, but it is also used in food production (fertilisers, pesticides...), clothing, dyes, plastics, varnishes, hygiene products, etc.. In less than a century, oil has modelled cities and society as we know them today, with all their progress and growth, but also their want and especially the consequences arising from these, such as overexploitation of the planet, pollution and climate change.
To depend entirely on a single material causes a huge vulnerability, especially if it is non-renewable, with a finite amount which will eventually run out after production first stagnates and then falls, in a process known as Peak Oil.
Our current cities have grown, been designed and are organised from unctional patterns based on the use and availability of cheap oil, but we know that this must change in years to come. Why not start thinking, organizing and planning our cities today, for the time beyond oil?

Daniel Lerch (Post Carbon Cities Institute, author of the book of the same name) will talk about the energy and climate uncertainties we face by concentrating on cities. He will analyse the phenomenon of Peak Oil - which signifies the end of the era of cheap oil, and how this will affect our cities and our everyday lives, finally proposing a series of recommendations
to local agencies, governments and civil society so they can tackle this future energy and climate uncertainty.

Finishing the session, Lluis Sabadell Artiga (Post Oil Cities) will present a series of inspirational projects from around the world, analysing the strategies developed to confront a future that must necessarily go through a shift in energy paradigm.

To sum up, a day to put many questions on the table about the future of Vic and Osona as we confront this scenario of energy and climate uncertainty, leading to an interesting audience debate.

Love exists in thousand ways

amor amor Toni Ferron organises a season on the theme of love, including a group exhibition, a performance, a concert at El Gravat, a film viewing at the Cineclub , performances at the Institut de Teatre and an afternoon of project presentations. ACVic organises this presentation [filtering love through the perceptions of Félix Pérez-Hita (love in the digital age), Jorge Lara (audio performance), Kiko Amat (love and records, and records of love) and Adiccionesporquesí (prepositions and erotic stories.) This activity is on 07/05/2011 from 17:00 pm. The complete programmme is below.

Love exists in a thousand ways. Ovid, Ars Amatoria.

Since the time of the Greeks the issue of love has raised profound reflections, leading to numerous questions due to the inability to rationalise it. This is probably because it is a feeling mixing the more primary primal emotions with primal actions, or, on the contrary, with absolutely rational and premeditated acts. It is without doubt the most universal feeling.

So much so that throughout the history of humanity love has been approached by all the artistic disciplines (art, literature, music, poetry, theatre, photography, film ...), as well as technical and scientific disciplines (medicine, ethics, philosophy, sociology ...), in order to comprehend it.
Curiously, however, during the twentieth century its presence is quite uneven: in literature, music, photography and cinema, it remains a persistent theme because of its universality, while in the visual arts, it disappears under the pressure of conceptual and formal standards.

These questions, in addition to the freedom that love has to offer as a subject, and the resulting variety of artistic possibilities, lead us to attempt to explain, through these talks with various cultural figures, how this emotion forms part of their creative process, the place it occupies, the form it takes, etc.
And, of course, these activities will serve to assert love as an integral emotion to the human condition. An emotion undervalued in contemporary visual arts. Toni Ferron

FROM THE MARGINS. BETWEEN ART AND PARTICIPATION IN RURAL CONTEXTS

ACVic. Desde los márgenes ACVic. Desde los márgenes A project presentation and debate about Art Centres that are developing activities in a rural contexts in Catalonia.
Participants: Cal Gras, Campo Adentro, Centre d'Art i Natura, CACIS Forn de Calç, Idensitat, Nau Coclea, Priorat Centre d'Art .

Activity organized by ACVic-SBG* as a result of the research Prismes by Marta Ricart.

08.04.2011 at 19.00 h
Place: ACVIC. C. Sant Francesc, 1 08500 Vic

- What reality do those who develop art projects find in contexts on the margins, away from the nucleus of decision and artistic display?
- In the course of our work as artists or managers, does art have any relationship with awareness, creating new audiences, or energising?
- How to build strategies for promotion and involvement in often dispersed and heterogeneous environments?
- Does the countryside need to create its own strategies and promotion?

Creators working in rural areas often find a very different reality from those living in more urban contexts. Rural areas, in spite of representing 90% of Catalan territory, are often invisible. The rural has been often associated with folklore and popular culture but in rural areas there are many varied artistic activities which, although developed in these environments, should not be marginalised or disregarded. There is no reason why so-called rural contexts should find themselves banished to the margins of creation.
Given the diverse and heterogeneous reality of the creative scene in our country's rural areas, From the Margins, a space for debate and sharing the different experiences of artists, promoters and managers making artistic and cultural proposals in rural areas, has been suggested.
The debate will be guided by artist, researcher and educator Marta Ricart which, beginning with the results of PRISMES (a creative and collaborative research which explores the dynamics, projects and realities of certain artistic proposals developed in rural areas), proposes an open approach to share, reflect and make visible what it means to create artistic processes in rural areas.

(*) ACVic-SBG is a program which connects art-nature-rural context. It is developed in collaboration between ACVic and the Municipality of Sant Bartomeu del Grau.
