TEACHERS
blablaLAB ("laboratori adisciplinar blablabLAB") is a structure of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Works in the cultural environment of the average citizen, through the collective imaginary, in real time while generating expectations. Develops its production with a distinctly political purpose, through parasitism and erosion of various disciplinary fields (science, technology, finance, biology, art, advertising, food ...), without a preset means or format for working, and with an extropian philosophy joining together with a DIY practice towards knowledge, combining generation, property, and diffusion-. Blablablab Imagines strategies and invents tools for confronting society with its multifaceted and complex, urban, technological, alienated, and hyperconsumerist reality. Haberlandt and Be Your Own Souvenir, are two recent projects of this collective which has been recognised with an honourable mention at the Prix Ars Electronica Awards 2011 in the categories The Next Idea and Hybrid Arts.

INTRODUCTION
Depending upon the surroundings and contexts of, and the responses to, their distribution, images may take on another meaning, transforming the communications strategies attributed to them by their producers. When we situate a work of art in an artistically decoded context, a completely different response to the picture may develop to that which we would usually expect. This also happens when we talk about other fields such as advertising, socio-political or religious information. This course aims to give tools to "professionals" and teachers to make them aware of the enormous complexity involved in understanding the image in a way that will also make it easier to understand the context in which their work will be presented. The course will be taught in plain language without losing sight of the complexity of some of the topics covered, providing a wide range of audiovisual resources to give users interpretative tools. This course has the objective of being a meeting point between different sensibilities, both professional and social.

OBJECTIVES

  • To reflect on the nature of the image depending on its context.
  • To raise awareness of the relationship between images and their roles.
  • To rearrange implicit categories which have defined “the image”.
  • To raise awareness of the preconceptions usually projected upon the producers of images.

COURSE CONTENTS
Introduction to the dynamics of the course The history of art as a history of using images. Style and functionality. The images and their grip. Anthropology of the image. Contemporary art out of context.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?
Especially aimed at professionals in design, audiovisual communication, journalism, art history, art practice, art education, but also at those interested in the subject who may not be professionals in the arts. No professional knowledge of any kind is necessary.

PROFESSOR
Jorge Luís Marzo is an art historian and curator. Writer and professor of Escola Elisava/Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona. Among his recent curatorial projects are d_efecte barroc.
